In 1998 John Butler was busking on the streets of Fremantle, West Australia. 3500 self funded cassette sales served as the foundation for becoming Australia's most successful independent artist ever.
Fast forward to 2011 and his label Jarrah Records has now been responsible for one million sales in Australia.
Home to other artists such as The Waifs, Jarrah Records continues to pave the way for independent artists in Australia.
Butler owns and operates his own record label- Jarrah Records— which has released the John Butler Trio’s last five studio albums, two live albums, two DVD’s and his first self titled album. 2003’s ‘Sunrise Over Sea’ was the first independently released album to reach number one in Australia, and, like the band’s fourth album ‘Grand National’, went on to enjoy multi-platinum success. In 2010 John Butler released the trio’s fifth studio album
‘April Uprising’ this was the band’s third consecutive album to debut at number one on the national Australian ARIA album charts.
JBT have taken their music to the world and continue to grow in stature and popularity in USA, Europe and Japan. They have become favourites at iconic festivals such as Fuji Rock Festival, Glastonbury, Bonnaroo, Big Day Out, and Coachella where Bruce Fessier of USA Today said "John Butler revealed himself to be arguably the finest guitarist at Coachella Festival". The John Butler Trio are thrilled to have played many European festivals and delivered main stage performances at New Orleans Jazz Festival and Lollapalooza. In June 2010 the band played their largest headlining show ever at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado USA, this concert was captured in its entirety and will be released on July 22nd 2011 as an exquisite 2 CD 1 DVD box set.
John was honoured to be asked to programme and headline the main stage at the annual East Coast Blues Festival, held in Byron Bay in April 2009. It was a celebratory affair marking their 20th anniversary and Ben Harper was the only other artist to be similarly honoured. The John Butler Trio also played three other Australian festivals and these were significant as the final shows with bass player Shannon Birchall and drummer Michael Barker.
In June 2009 John revealed the new line up for the Trio which includes bass player Byron Luiters, who has been a member of Sydney outfit The Ray Man Three and Nicky Bomba on drums and percussion who was the principal drummer on JBT’s 5 x platinum Sunrise Over Sea album.
John took to the Northern Hemisphere to perform a series of solo shows in July 2009, including the prestigious Montreal Jazz Festival for the first time along with other great festivals including Rothbury and the Mile High Festival in Denver. He returned to Australia in August to perform at the Cannot Buy My Soul Concert with a long list of talented local musicians taking to the stage to reinterpret the wonderful catalogue of Kev Carmody.
In April 2010 the John Butler Trio globally released ‘April Uprising’, the band’s fifth studio album. Well embraced by fans and media alike the album has received unsurpassed reviews in all markets around the world. ‘One Way Road’, the first single released from the album received a massive amount of airplay in Australia and took out the number one spot on the national airplay chart on January 7th 2010, the day the sold out single tour commenced for the band. The track was chosen for the summer campaign for Channel 10’s new 24 hour sports channel, Channel One.
The second single ‘Close To You’ received the same positive reaction at radio and took out the accolade of ‘Best Blues and Roots work at the 2011 APRA Awards.
‘Revolution’ the opening track from the album was named video of the year in 2010 for ABC TV;’s Rage program. The band sold out major venues across Australia on their album tour and are selling out shows internationally as they continue on another massive tour into Europe and America .
In July 2011 the John Butler Trio released ‘Live At Red Rocks’, a stunning box set of their captivating, largest headline concert ever which took place in June 2010 at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, USA. This 3 disc package includes 2 Live Audio CD’s plus a DVD showcasing the concert in its entirety with over 2 hrs of viewing pleasure. The DVD includes special features of behind the scenes footage, interviews, Traditional Native American dance performances and the official video clip for ‘Revolution’.
In May 2012 John Butler returned to his roots to perform a solo tour. He took to the road with his ‘Tin Shed’ – a set designed by him including many personal items, his artworks and his old skool skateboard collection. A a double CD live recording, ‘Tin Shed Tales’, was released following the tour. It brilliantly captures the intimate and personal nature of the tour with John performing tracks from his catalogue and sharing anecdotes with the audience.
